Tim was one of our teachers and he had a cat.
One day, the cat seemed to be really sick. It was shivering violently and its fur was matted down.
Luckily, a Bulgarian veterinarian lived only about a mile away and so Tim decided to take the cat to her. As he didn't have a pet carrier, he decided to take the cat in a large empty detergent bucket. He washed out the bucket, punched several holes in the lid, put the cat inside and walked to the vet's house.
The vet took off the bucket lid and looked down at the shivering, crying cat.
"You know what is problem with cat?" she asked.
"No," said Tim.
The vet looked at him sternly. "Is not good make him live in plastic bucket."

About This Blog
Libya in the 1970s was a fascinating place to live and work. Ghadaffi had just come to power and he had not yet become the brutal dictator that we were to see in later years. The country was starting to move into the modern world.
I loved my years there. Overall, it was the friendliest and most pleasant place I've ever lived. But it was often very frustrating and sometimes it was simply weird. I always think of it as being rather like Alice's Wonderland.
I hope my stories will catch some of the unique flavour of the country and its people.

About Me
I went to Libya in 1973 to direct the International House language school in Tripoli.
I lived there with my first wife, Sue, until 1977. Our daughter, Emma, was born in Tripoli in 1975.
