.
For a few months, Sue and I rented a small house on a farm. Before we signed the rental contract, the farmer insisted on showing us around his farm. He was particularly keen to show us six black and white cows that he had recently bought. “These are my cows. We brought them from Holland.”
Sue and I tried to look impressed. The farmer waited, obviously expecting us to comment on the cows.
Sue filled in the pause. “What are they called?”
“Cows,” said the farmer.
“Yes,” Sue followed up, “But what are their names What do you call them?”
“Oh, their names” said the farmer. He pointed to the first animal and enunciated his words very carefully. “This one is called Cow.” He pointed to the second one. “This one is also called Cow.” Gesturing to the third, “This one is called Cow, too.”
And so on with the remaining three cows.
Well, ask a silly question ...
